A Story of Early 20th Century Jewish Labor Struggle
Through music, storytelling and photos
In this 45 minute presentation we use songs, art and stories inspired by the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. The workshop connects the historical event with modern-day labor conditions while telling stories, showing photos and performing the songs inspired by the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. It is a powerful, moving and educational program. By examining the historical context and drawing parallels to contemporary issues, participants can gain a deeper understanding of the ongoing challenges in the labor movement. Sharing art and songs related to the event can further amplify the emotional impact and help preserve the memory of those who suffered in the fire.

The triangle shirtwaist factory fire was one of the greatest atrocities in the early 20th century in Jewish labor history of New York. The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory was a garment factory located in the Asch Building. Hundreds of Jewish immigrant women were locked in the factory when a fire broke out. During the fire, 146 workers, mostly young immigrant women, lost their lives due to locked doors, inadequate fire exits, and unsafe working conditions. The event had a profound impact on labor laws and workers' rights in the United States. The fire is often considered a turning point in labor history, leading to significant changes in workplace safety standards.
The tragedy spurred the labor movement to advocate for better safety regulations and workers' rights and the protests that happened after empowered the community and workers alike to fight to improve labor conditions. The aftermath of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire led to increased awareness, protests and activism for improved labor conditions.
